12. (a) How can we make our life sublime as stated in the poem “A Psalm of Life”?
Ans :
According to the poet life is real. It is earnest. Its goal is not grave. Life is not an empty dream, Soul is not made of dust and it does not return to duct. So the soul should not sleep. It should always be active. Enjoyment or sorrow is not the end or aim of life. So we should act as every tomorrow is very far away to to-day. So to-day should not be wasted. World is a broad battle field and life is a soldiers’ camp.
Man should not take rest in this camp but like a hero face all struggles bravely. There is nó.use in trusting the future or remembering the past. One should live in the present and act wholeheartedly cheerfully, and courageously, believing in God.
We can make our lives wonderful and be standing examples for others to come and by our lives we could inspire others who are struggling alone. So we should always be up and doing. We should continue to work steadily then we will achieve for ever.
Life is not an empty dream and we should not believe that we are made of dust and we would final return to dust. We must believe life to be real and earnest. To reach the grave is not the goal of life. In life we have to act every moment. Enjoyment or sorrow shoul not be our end.

16. Summarise EM. Forster’s views about the virtue needed most in the postwar world.
Ans :
Introduction :
In his essay, ‘Tolerance’. E.M. Forster th rows light on the value of tolerance in the reconstruction of the world after the Second World War. He ranks tolerar ce as the highest quality needed for the world at large.
Reconstruction :
After the Second World War, all talk about rebuilding the world or reconstructing the civilization Forster feels that the architects, contractors and marketing boards cannot rebuild a nation by themselves.
Love :
Many people feel that love is the virtue that is needed in the post-war world. They say that nations should love one another and people should love one another. Forster does not agree with them. He says that love is a great force in private life but it does not work in public affairs.
Tolerance – post-war world :
Tolerance is a very dull, negative virtue. It is boring Many great men have never recommended it. Tolerance means putting up with people, being able to stand things. Tolerance is the spiritual quality that is needed in the post-war world Tolerance does not mean weakness or yielding to others. It is only putting up with people whom we do not like. It is the only virtue by which we can rebuild the world and make it a safe and peaceful place.
Two solutions :
• The first is the Nazi solution. That is to kill, banish and segregate them.
• The other one is to put upwith the people whom one does not like.
As by trying to love them one would strain oneself, one should try to tolerate them. Tolerance is the best foundation for the post-war world
Conclusion :
Forster concludes the essay by saying that it is easy to see fanaticism in other people but it is difficult to spot it in oneself For example, the English accuse the Nazis of racial prejudice while they themselves are equally guilty of racial and colour prejudice Tolerance is not a weakness: Putting up with people does not mean giving in to them Forster hopes that after civilisation is rebuilt on the basis of tolerance, love may enter it and become the greatest force in publife life too.
17. What is the importance of the mirror in the poem “The Queen’s Rival”?
Ans :
Introduction :
The poem “The Queen’s Rival” is composed by Sarojini Naidu. It is a narrative poem set in the backdrop of persia. The whole poem revolves round the character of Queen Guinaar. Sarojin: Naidu talks about the beauty of the Queen in one hand and her restlessness in the another hand. She states the reasons for her restlessness and finally the poem ends with a note of joy.
Queen’s Desire
Queen, Gulnaar is noted for her extra-ordinary beauty She leads a luxur ous life is the palace with King Feroz. Inspite of the pompous palace life, the queen is not satisfied. She is longing to have a rival for her beauty. She is always sighing like a murmuring rose.
She asks the king to give her a rival who can compete with her beauty. The king sends out his messengers to find a suitable rival to the queen. The messengers have brought seven damsels to be the rivals of the queen but the queen is not satisfied. She continues to look at the mirror and murmuring herself.
Psychological concept :
The poetess highlights a delicate psychological point it is that any power, prosperity or beauty if vested in one person, it becomes the cause of dissatisfaction. Rivalry in any field or aspeci of life is the most essential factor for mental happiness and satisfaction.
Queen’s Rival :
After some years, a change has happened. The Queen Gulnaar gives birth to a baby girl. When she becomes two years old, she approaches her mother and snatches the mirror away from her hand. She wears her mother’s hair band around her head and presses her sweet kiss on the mirror.
The innocent gesture of the child makes Gulnaar laugh like a rose trembling on a plant with soft wind. She exclaims with joy that her two years old daughter is her rival. She is highly satisfied and remains at peace.
conclusion :
Sarojini Naidu gives a dramatic encl to the poern. It portrays the reality of life. The poetess has successfully presented the psychological point of mothering and motherhood through this poem. King Feroz, in his passionate infatuation for his queen does not understand what the queen is hinting at. The whole story reflects the life of persian royal family.
